1 Além do IF, as seguintes conjunções podem também ser empregues para introduzir as orações condicionais IF-CLAUSEs, apesar das mesmas nem sempre terem o mesmo significado que IF:



Exemplos:





as long as (desde que)



• As long as you have a valid driving licence, you can drive

anywhere you like in the country.

• Desde que tenhas uma carta de condução válida, podes conduzir

em qualquer parte que quiseres neste país.





assuming (that) (supondo que; admitindo que)



• Assuming (that) you are wrong about it, what will you do?

• Supondo que estejas enganado sobre isso, o que vais fazer?





even if (mesmo que)



• Even if I had the money, I would still not buy the house.

• Mesmo que eu tivesse o dinheiro, não compraria a casa.





if only (se pelo menos; se ao menos)



• If only I had the money.

• Se eu ao menos tivesse o dinheiro.





in case (no caso de; para o caso de)



• Take your umbrella in case it rains.

• Leva o teu chapéu de chuva para o caso de chover.





on condition (that) (com a condição de que; só se)



• I'll go to the cinema with you on condition (that) you let her come

with us.

• Só vou contigo ao cinema se a deixares vir connosco.





provided (that) (desde que)



• Provided (that) you leave early, you'll catch the train.

• Desde que saias cedo, apanharás o comboio.





providing (that) (desde que)



• Providing (that) your mother doesn't complain, I'll take you to

school.

• Desde que a tua mãe não se queixe, levo-te à escola.





so long as (desde que)



• You can go out with your friends so long as you come back home

by 10 o'clock.

• Podes sair com os teus amigos desde que voltes para a casa

antes das 10.





suppose (that) (supondo que)



• Suppose (that) he doesn't come, what will you do?

• Supondo que ele não vem, o que farás?





supposing (that) (supondo que)



• Supposing (that) he asks you to marry him, what will you say?

• Supondo que ele te peça em casamento, o que vais dizer?





unless (a menos que; a não ser que)



• Unless you help her, she won't be able to do the exercise.

• A não ser que tu ajudes, ela não conseguirá fazer o exercício.
